Program Design of PW Junior Citizens Summer Camp 2019

In the last few decades, the challenges facing our world have never been more severe: global warming, exploitation of resources, pollution, wars and deprivation of human rights. Each of them poses a serious threat to the sustainability of human life as we know it.In 2015, the United Nations established the 17 Sustainable Development Goals calling for urgent action and collaboration among nations to transform our world for the better. However, although the SDGs were set as the ultimate goal in agendas across many important international summits and discussed among various disciplines, progress has been slow while the challenges continue to grow.

Inevitably, the next generation will be burdened with the world in a critical situation. How should they be introduced to this unpleasant reality and how can we equip them with the abilities to tackle the coming adversities? Moreover, how can the two generations work together?

In view of this situation, Peace Warabe Japan believes that our world needs leaders with the courage and abilities to initiate unconventional reforms and disseminate the idea of sustainable development. Furthermore, to imbue future generations with the leadership skills to institute positive changes, education is a key factor in achieving that goal.

The Program

Peace Warabe Japan aims to nurture and empower the younger generation to become independent, responsible, passionate, and compassionate global citizens, who take up the role of catalysts of positive social change for the future. We have prepared a safe and dynamic learning environment in nature where young people meet, communicate and learn together, and form life-long connections.

The program we provide is challenging and stimulating. It is based on a problem-solving and enquiry-learning approach which encourages high-level, cooperative learning and the development of skills that will be essential in the world of tomorrow. In each activity, students will be led through the learning process –applying research methods, analysis through critical thinking, and drawing conclusions from their findings.

We offer a life-changing experience to young people to help them grow into empowered individuals who act to create a better world. With the global skills they gain in our program, we anticipate seeing them lead future reforms in their communities and in the world.

Summer Camp 2019 Core Activities

Junior World Leaders Forum (3 sessions)

Students will work in groups of 6 with each group representing a particular country. Each group will be given a set of cards with factual information of that particular country. Using the given information, they will identify domestic problems, and analyze how their countries contribute to the existing real-world problems posted around the classroom.

The students will be given group discussion time in the first session. In the second session, they will negotiate with other groups (countries) to find solutions to the world problems. The goal will be for each group to consider how to improve the world’s condition, while also improving the lives of their own citizens. In the final session, they will review and evaluate the decisions made in the previous two sessions.

Students will be guided through the following processes by facilitators:

The aim of the Junior World Leaders Forum is to have students experience the responsibilities of leading the world, working together towards a peaceful and sustainable future for all mankind. They will come to understand that there are foreseeable and unforeseeable consequences for each decision made. They will learn that although the world’s major problems are interconnected and complex, those problems may be solved through good-faith negotiations and compromise.

Leadership and problem-solving training (2 sessions)

Leadership training involves more than skills to lead others; it is a process of understanding the strengths and weaknesses of oneself and each group member while making the group and each other achieve better. It involves using that knowledge to communicate effectively within the group, leverage the abilities of each member to draw out their best, and develop solutions to overcome different challenges.

The “Be the Big Brain” creative project requires both independent thinking and high-level teamwork. Students will work in groups and produce a model of an invention that solves one of the world crises. Then, students will present an implementation plan in the final session. They will be given guidance on how to research and develop their invention using design thinking. The two main challenges in this activity are: 1) how to address a workable problem from a big issue, and 2) how to put ideas into practice.
